1. What is CAA Law
CAA stands for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. It’s a law passed in 2019 to grant Indian citizenship to certain religious minorities from neighboring countries.

CAA aims to help six religious minorities (Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians) who fled to India before December 2014 from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan

Only those who sought refuge in India before December 31, 2014, from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan can apply for Indian citizenship under CAA.

CAA became a law in December 2019 after passing through Parliament and receiving approval from the President. However, after making the new law, it was also demonstrated in many parts of India.
5. How to Apply for Citizenship?
The application process for CAA is entirely online, and applicants don’t need extra documents. They only need to mention when they arrived in India.
6. Who Can Grant Citizenship?
Over 30 District Magistrates and Home Secretaries in nine states are empowered to grant Indian citizenship to eligible individuals under CAA.
7. How Many Have Benefitted?
According to the Home Ministry’s 2021 report, 1,414 non-Muslim minority individuals from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan were granted Indian citizenship between April and December 2021.
8. Clarification for Indian Citizens
Indian citizens’ rights are unaffected by CAA Rules as they are already citizens under the Constitution, and CAA cannot change that.
9. Legislative Process
CAA was introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha in December 2019 and passed with 125 votes in favor and 105 against. It received the President’s approval the following day.

10. Background of CAA Rules
The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 laid the foundation for CAA. It aimed to amend the 1955 law to provide citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. The Joint Parliamentary Committee reviewed it and submitted a report in January 2019.
